O'Rourke Preserve

Beaver Lake in Mill Neck is the third largest lake in Nassau and has clean, fresh water. Sixteen acres, nearly a third of it, has been deeded to the North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary Inc. and harbors a good variety of fish, including Yellow Perch, Pumpkinseed, American Eel, and very large Carp, as well as Snapping and Painted Turtles, and an assortment of frogs. Many birds use its waters, notably Ospreys, Double-crested Cormorants, Canada Geese, and ducks such as American Wigeon, Gadwalls, Wood Ducks, and Ruddy Ducks. Mute Swans are residents and White Pelican, Snow Goose, and Barnacle Goose have been seen here.
