To enter this mature upland wood, one traverses a grassy lane along the edge
of an open field bordered by a multiflora rose hedge alive with small mammals and birds
that find food and shelter there. Pleasant hiking trails meander through the oak and
hickory woods and past a hemlock grove with a bank of evergreen Christmas ferns. In
spring their fiddleheads look like silver tassels as they emerge. A fox den under a large
tree root is easily seen from the trail. Pennoyer Woods is open by appointment: email Tom
Hornosky, the Warden at [email protected].
The Preserve is reached by Underhill Road, Locust Valley.
